Ironing Board Organiser

Posted by Christine Flood

When I sew, I am messy - like most of us, I’m sure!   So, let's hope this organiser keeps you tidy at the ironing board - pins, tape measure, snips, pressing cloth etc. The Fancy Trim Foot is a great foot to add some interesting trims!

Machine Requirements:

1. Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machine 1-9
2. Fancy Trim Foot P/N 4128238-45
3. Inspira Twin Needle 4mm
4. Husqvarna Viking B Foot

Requirements:

1. 50cm patchwork fabric for main
2. 25cm contrast fabric
3. 25cm fusible Pellon
4. 2m of 6mm satin ribbon - or 1m each of 2 different colours
5. 6cm piece of Velcro
6. Small amount of toy stuffing for pincushion
7. Embroidery threads
8. Construction
9. Tear away
10. Fabric market

Cutting Instructions:

1. Cut 2 main fabric pieces - 29"x9"
2. Cut 2 contrast fabric pieces 8"x9" large pocket
3. Cut 2 contrast fabric pieces 4 1/2 x 9" small pocker
4. Cut 1 fusilbe Pellon for 1 of the above pieces
5. Cut 2 pieces contrast fabric 2"x9" for binding
6. Cut 2 contrast fabric pieces 8"x4" pincushion

Sewing Instructions:

1. Fuse Pellon onto one main piece, one large pocket and one small pocket.
2. Take large and small fused pocket pieces and mark a line down from top to bottom centre at 4 1/2" - then 1 1/2" inches either side.

3. Place Fancy Trim foot onto machine; thread up with embroidery thread, and place tearaway under.

4. The first row is either side of the centre line. I chose Menu 3 - stitch 35. Width 6 Length 5.

5. Thread a piece of chosen colour ribbon into the slot of the foot, making sure it is sitting out at the back of the foot, by about 1inch. Sew slowly down this line, making sure the stitch sits neatly over the ribbon - so easy with this foot guiding you along. Repeat with the other side of the centre line - and on your small pocket.
6. To sew the outer line, choose another coloured ribbon, and place it onto the slot of the foot. This time I chose a heart pattern, on all Husqvarna machines - width and length as set. Remember to mirror image on the opposite side.

7. Remove the Fancy Trim Foot and place the A foot on. Attach 4mm Twin needle, and thread up both needles with construction thread (I often use a wound bobbin for the 2nd Spool of thread, as it winds off easily, and you don't have to have 2 reels of thread). Place the bottom pieces of large and small pocket pieces of large and small pocket pieces, wrong sides together, and pin or clip together.
8. Take your two 2"x9" contrast fabric pieces - press the long raw edge into the centre, and then in half - these are your neat binding pieces. Now clip or pin these bindings over the top of the raw edge of each pocket. Using your Twin needle, sew the binding on.

9. Now take your pocket pieces, and pin or clip onto the main piece with the Pellon attached - the large one to hang at the front and small at the back. Still using the Twin needle, place your Fancy Trim Foot back on, and thread the remaning ribbon into the slot, leaving the long tail at the back. Sew down the centre of the pcokets, with straight stitch, attaching it to the main piece. The piece of ribbon at the start of this row will be turned under thr binding, and re-sewn to finish, still using the Twin needle. Remove Twin needle and replace with usual one.

10. Place your first piece of Velcro onto one piece of your pincushion. Centre this up, and sew on with straight stitch. Using both pieces of fabric, sew right sides together, all around with 1/4" seam Menu 2 stitch no 1, leaving a gap to turn through. Press after turning.
11. Place the 2nd piece of Velcro onto main fabric, 11 inches up from the bottom edge (3inches up from pocker). Sew on, as previously.

12. With straight stitch length 3.0 sew around the pockets to attach to main. The remaining long fabric is placed right sides together onto finished work-pin this place and sew all around, leaving a gap to turn through. Press after turning.
13. Lastly, stuff your pincushion with wadding, and pop onto the finished organiser, and handsew the gap closed!
14. From now on - a tidy sewing room and ironing board!
