Hand appliqué, where the edges were painstakingly turned under and a blanket stitch was used to appliqué the designs in place, is a very nostalgic, fun look. It is very much in vogue today. We have been doing a technique for many years, where the appliqué shape is sewn with a fusible interfacing, right sides together, a slit is made in the interfacing to turn, and the result is a finished, turned under edge on the appliqué pieces. Sewing around the pieces is time consuming, and not always accurate, so in this embroidery design, you will do that technique, but stitch it all in the hoop, instead of manually stitching the curves and corners.
