Round trip airfare and hotel to International Quilt Festival 2005. There will be one first prize given.
RUNNER-UP PRIZE: Husqvarna Viking Quilt Designer sewing machine. There will be one runner-up prize given.
Competition theme: Art Takes Shape Quilt art can be defined as the product of creativity reflected through shape and form. Shape, whether geometric or free form, is an area contained within a line or can be seen and identified because of color or value change. Let your creativity take shape and you'll have met the general theme for the new worldwide Husqvarna Viking competition. Entries can be traditional or art quilts that speak to the theme. Any techniques—piecing, appliqué, embroidery, whole cloth and/or manipulated fabric, etc.—may be used as long as they are accomplished predominantly by use of the home sewing machine. Quilts are to be made specifically for the contest and must not have been published in books, calendars, magazines, websites, or any other form of publication prior to November 2005.
Categories: There is one overall category.
Limit on entries: Each entrant may submit up to two works that must be made predominantly on a home sewing machine. Any materials may be used; however, the final result must be flexible in nature and consist of three layers.
Size of entries: Each work must measure 51 inches (130cm) on each side (51in x 51in or 130cm x 130cm). Each entry must have a 4in (10cm) finished sleeve or casing sewn to the top back edge of the quilt (please include a .25in/.635cm ease in the sleeve or casing). Sleeves should be secured with stitching at the top and bottom edge. A cloth label with the entrant’s name, address, telephone number, and e-mail must be securely sewn to the back of the quilt.
Jury: An international jury of Jacqueline Govin of France, Naomi Ichikawa of Japan, and a third juror will select the works. The jury’s decision is final. Upon seeing the final quilts, the organizers reserve the right to decide which quilts will be included in the exhibition. The organizers reserve the right to refuse any work that does not match the slides submitted to the jury.
Catalog: A full color catalog will be published, and each selected artist will receive a complimentary copy.
ENTERING THE COMPETITION
Who may enter: The entries may be the work of more than one person as long as proper credit is given to all involved in the actual completion of the quilt. The person entering the quilt must have been involved in making the quilt. Limit 2 entries per person or group. Full-time employees of VSM Group AB, VSM Sewing Inc., or its subsidiaries, and Quilts, Inc. are not eligible. While previous winners are welcome and encouraged to enter the competition, at least one contest year must elapse before their entries can again be considered for a prize.
Slides: Slides of the entries will not be returned. The jurors will select finalists from slides of the original works. Each entrant must send the following:
- Three sets of two different color slides for each quilt entered—one full view & one close-up showing the details of the machine stitching. For example:
1 quilt x 2 slides x 3 sets=6 slides OR 2 quilts x 2 slides x 3 sets=12 slides
1 quilt x 2 digital photos x 3 sets= 3 CD ROMs PLUS 1 quilt x 2 photographs x 3 sets = 6 photographs OR 2 quilts x 2 digital photos x 3 sets = 6 CD ROMs PLUS 2 quilts x 2 photographs x 3 sets = 12 photographs
There will be three international jurors. Having three sets of identical slides will allow simultaneous jurying in different locations. Glass slides are not acceptable. All slides or digital images submitted must be good quality and well lighted; however, the quilts selected for the exhibition will be professionally photographed for the catalog.
Copyright permission: Entry into the competition automatically grants copyright permission for the image of the quilt and/or all or part of the Artist’s Statement about the quilt to be used in articles, ads, promotions, catalogs, books, websites (including any Webcast coverage) CDs, current event news coverage, television productions and/or multimedia productions for and about the International Quilt Festival, International Quilt Market, or Patchwork & Quilt Expo, for and about the special exhibit “MasterPieces: Art Takes Shape” or for and about quilting and developing creativity. The quilt artist retains copyright to the quilt.
Entry Deadline: All completed, signed entry forms, slides, and entry fees must be POSTMARKED no later than May 20, 2005. See competition calendar below for other important dates.
Length of exhibit: The participating works must be available for two years, from July 2005 through July 2007. Quilts will be returned to entrants in August 2007.

Mail entries to: Quilts, Inc., attn: Husqvarna Viking – Art Takes Shape, 7660 Woodway, Suite 550, Houston, Texas 77063, USA. POSTMARKED no later than MAY 20, 2005. The complete entry should contain:
- Completed, signed Entry Form per quilt;
- Non-refundable entry fee for up to 2 different quilts of $15 (U.S. Dollars only); and
- 3 sets (1 full view of completed quilt, 1 detail of completed quilt) of 2 clearly marked slides per entry (total=6 slides per quilt). Be sure to indicate the top of each slide and identify each slide with the title of our quilt and the size.
- Two digital images (1 full view of completed quilt, 1 detail of completed quilt) with no modifications including color correction on 3 CD-ROMs. You may crop the background ONLY. You must also send three sets (1 full view of completed quilt, 1 detail of completed quilt) of two clearly marked photographs per entry (total=6 photographs per quilt). Be sure to indicate the top of each photograph, and identify each photograph with your name, quilt title, and size. We recommend using a minimum 4 MP (megapixel) camera, on highest resolution setting, saved as a jpeg or tiff file. Lower megapixels and resolution settings can produce poor results that can eliminate a quilt because its color, design, and detail can't be viewed clearly. Be sure to "finish" the CDs when you write them, so they can be opened. Be sure to label each disk with your name and title(s) of the work.
